Miloliʻi ʻŌpelu Project

Project Description: Learn the traditional methodʻs of ʻōpelu fishing from Miloliiʻs ʻōpelu experts. Learn how to make palu, prepare your equipment, launch the boat or waʻa, find the ʻōpelu koa and hanai (feed) the ʻōpelu. Learn how to observe the ocean, the currents and the migratory patterns of the ʻōpelu. Learn traditional ʻōpelu ʻoli and hawaiian protocol. Learn about coastal conservation and best practice management programs. Participate in cross cultural exchanges with other south kona fishing communities.

Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi & Hula

Project Description for Hybrid Cultural Learning of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and Hula.
The combination of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and Hula is an old new idea.  It’s taking the muscle memory component (motor) of Hula combined with the translation and recognition of Hawaiian sentence patterns (cognitive) in the mele of hula combined, both promotes an excelled rich way of educating our community.  The hybrid approach to this way of learning puts Miloliʻi in the frontline of indigenous education.

Kumu Shafton Kaupu-Cabuag will be teaching the Hawaiian Language to interested residents.

Hoʻe Waʻa

Project Description: Learn the very basics of paddling a waʻa kaukahi (hawaiian outrigger canoe). Learn all the parts of a waʻa in hawaiian, commands etc. Learn the proper method of stroking, seat position, getting in and out of the waʻa and propelling the waʻa forward as a collective group. Speak all waʻa commands and phrases in hawaiian. Compete against other south kona waʻa clubs and communities.

The Hālau Project

Project Description: Learn how to build a traditional hawaiian hut (hālau) using traditional materials.

2017 Miloliʻi Lawaiʻa ʻOhana Camp

Project Description: The 6th annual 2017 Miloliʻi Lawaiʻa ʻOhana camp is made possible by a grant from Conservation International and the Hawaiʻi Fish Trust. It is a 4 day immersion in hawaiian culture, protocol and fellowship. It is centered around teaching the proper care and awareness for Miloliiʻs nearshore fisheries and coastal resources.
